Take the Strain Out of Moving Abroad

For many of us the appeal of moving abroad leads us to seriously consider this most important of decisions. However, while this can turn out to be the best decision of our life, if not properly planned it can be severely detrimental to our health due to the stress and strain that it can cause.

As with many important projects, the devil is in the detail, and you need to ensure that the move is planned thoroughly in advance, from the legal and financial aspects, such as inheritance and mortgage, through to the logistical side such as international shipping services.

It is amazing how many times you hear of people who, lured by the cheap property prices or the dream of an exotic life-style, up sticks and move to a foreign country without any consideration for how they will earn a living or how they will cope with the bureaucracy and local legislation. Healthcare Abroad

For those who are brave enough (and lucky enough!) to take the step of either buying a second house or completely relocating to a foreign country, healthcare has to be one of the prime components of the planning process.

So before you book the removals to France or Spain, make sure that you research this most important aspect thoroughly to ensure that you are covered.

If you have private healthcare, discuss the planned move with your insurer to make sure that you are eligible for treatment in the new country, whether it be routine healthcare or emergency treatment. This may depend on whether you are planning to move permanently or just reside there part time. (more...)

Best Not Ignore the Dust!

With an increasing number of people nowadays having some sort of allergy problems, we must try harder than ever to keep our houses or apartments free of dust and dirt.

Firstly it is important that we choose the right type of vacuum cleaner for our carpet flooring or wooden floors. Make sure that it is powerful enough to pick up all of the dust and pet hairs and that it is versatile enough to reach all of the nooks and crannies. The filtration system is also very important and those with allergies should consider a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filtration system which picks up the dust particles most efficiently.

Some vacuum cleaners have the British Allergy Association Seal of Approval which means that it has passed all of the stringent tests to prove that it eliminates all but the tiniest percentage of dust particles. (more...)

Learn to speak English for a healthy mind

For a holistic approach to healthcare it is vital that we keep both body and mind as active as possible. This can take many forms and is probably easier than you think.

Keep your mind active by doing the usual exercises that we associate with this, or even something different. Crosswords, reading and puzzles are all a great way to keep your brain engaged. Learn to speak English if you are a non-English speaker or learn a new foreign language such as German, French or Russian. You will also have fun along the way.

Keep your body fit and supple with some form of regular exercise. The gym is great, but it is expensive and some find it boring. Instead, incorporate more activity into your everyday life. Try walking or cycling to the shops instead of taking the car. Or maybe go for something totally out of your comfort zone such as kayaking or sailing. (more...)

Are We a Customer of the Healthcare System?

This is just a personal opinion, but it often feels that, rather than being treated as clients of the healthcare system, we are treated as a number or a statistic. We pay for our healthcare either indirectly, through taxes, or directly, for private healthcare, and what a difference there is in the two, in the way we are treated and spoken to.

Although there is supposedly a system of complaints customer reviews, I often feel that my voice and that of millions of other people, are just not being heard. Or maybe just not being listened to.

Although I do not wish to generalise, as there are many good doctors out there, many of the ones I have seen are dismissive or uncaring. Maybe they are too pressed by deadlines and targets to give us the treatment we really deserve. And the waiting lists are often long, too long, with weeks or months of suffering before necessary operations are performed. (more...)

Do not Forget the First Aid kit!

A first aid kit is an essential for any home, car or place of work. It is easy to forget about having a first aid kit box because for most people it is not something that is used every day. However, on the odd occasion that it is needed, a first aid kit box will be invaluable to health and in some cases, prompt first aid action has saved lives and minimised serious injury.

A first aid kit should be kept in an air tight box, clearly marked and always kept in the same place so that everybody know exactly where it is. It is no good in an emergency if time is wasted in searching for the lost first aid kit box!

The contents of a first aid kit box can vary according to individual needs or legal requirements. However, the basic contents should include alcohol-free wipes, plasters, dressing bandages, gloves, tape, scissors and safety pins, eye bath and sterile eye dressing. (more...)

Do Not Cut Corners When it Comes to Your Health

Let's face it, there are few of us who haven't thought, at least fleetingly, about the prospect of some sort of plastic and cosmetic surgery to help us with our imperfections. If you are considering cosmetic surgery though there are a few things you should consider. Although it sounds basic, make sure that the doctor is properly qualified in the area of surgery or type of operation that you are thinking of. Many people are tempted to have their surgery abroad where it is usually far cheaper, but other countries may have lax legislation when it comes to setting up as a cosmetic surgeon.

You hear so many tales of people who have been lured by the promise of cheap surgery, only to find that it goes badly wrong. With some, it has affected their health on a permanent basis, as the damage cannot always be undone or the operation has caused serious side effects. Apart from the health dangers, it can be difficult to successfully prosecute any cosmetic surgeon for damages if he or she is based abroad, and you can end up paying for corrective surgery on top.

Not only should the doctor be properly qualified, but also the nurses who will be caring for you. Consider cosmetic surgery by all means, but make sure that you are in the hands of somebody professional and capable.

Increased Cancer Risk from Popular Health Products

A popular class of drugs used to treat heart disease have been linked to a slight increase in the risk of cancer. An American study, which included nine separate trials, tested angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) and found an additional cancer patient for every one hundred subjects.

As extensive as the study was, officials are urging people to continue taking these health products.

Heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the UK and an estimated 2.5 million people take these medications. The number of deaths that would occur if each of them were to stop taking them would be unimaginable. (more...)

Our Health is Important

Our world is unpredictable therefore we have to take care of our bodies. When we think about the foods we eat and what we put into our bodies it all has an effect on what our overall health will be. Processed foods and other types of junk all leave behind some residue in our bodies.

This rubbish basically turns into fat which is why our society's collective waistlines are continually increasing. If we want to stay healthy there are several things that we need to incorporate into our daily lives.

You can worry about your parcel shipping service or you can jump on the treadmill and start burning calories. The more calories that you burn, the more fat that will come off. (more...)

Watch Your Health

When we think about our health there are a lot of things that most people do not know. For instance, did you know that the more calories that you put in your body the more weight that you could potentially gain? Did you know that the average fast food burger has between 600 and 1000 calories? In some cases that can be half of our daily allotment since the average person should consume around 2000 calories each day.

When we eat things we need to take our health into consideration. A lot of people count calories but that rarely works because they are never satisfied or will always be hungry. You can worry about shipping overseas movers or you can start worrying about burning off some of that excess fat you have around your waist.

Making time for daily exercise is a must if you want to stay healthy. A simple jog or even a walk will help you stay in shape and burn off some calories. (more...)
