Supports transplant units throughout the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. For many of us the appeal of moving abroad leads us to seriously consider this most important of decisions. However, while this can turn out to be the best decision of our life, if not properly planned it can be severely detrimental to our health due to the stress and strain that it can cause. As with many important projects, the devil is in the detail, and you need to ensure that the move is planned thoroughly in advance, from the legal and financial aspects, such as inheritance and mortgage, through to the logistical side such as international shipping services. It is amazing how many times you hear of people who, lured by the cheap property prices or the dream of an exotic life-style, up sticks and move to a foreign country without any consideration for how they will earn a living or how they will cope with the bureaucracy and local legislation. (more...) For those who are brave enough (and lucky enough!) to take the step of either buying a second house or completely relocating to a foreign country, healthcare has to be one of the prime components of the planning process. So before you book the removals to France or Spain, make sure that you research this most important aspect thoroughly to ensure that you are covered. If you have private healthcare, discuss the planned move with your insurer to make sure that you are eligible for treatment in the new country, whether it be routine healthcare or emergency treatment. This may depend on whether you are planning to move permanently or just reside there part time. (more...) For a holistic approach to healthcare it is vital that we keep both body and mind as active as possible. This can take many forms and is probably easier than you think. Keep your mind active by doing the usual exercises that we associate with this, or even something different. Crosswords, reading and puzzles are all a great way to keep your brain engaged. Learn to speak English if you are a non-English speaker or learn a new foreign language such as German, French or Russian. You will also have fun along the way. Keep your body fit and supple with some form of regular exercise. The gym is great, but it is expensive and some find it boring. Instead, incorporate more activity into your everyday life. Try walking or cycling to the shops instead of taking the car. Or maybe go for something totally out of your comfort zone such as kayaking or sailing. (more...) This is just a personal opinion, but it often feels that, rather than being treated as clients of the healthcare system, we are treated as a number or a statistic. We pay for our healthcare either indirectly, through taxes, or directly, for private healthcare, and what a difference there is in the two, in the way we are treated and spoken to. Although there is supposedly a system of complaints customer reviews, I often feel that my voice and that of millions of other people, are just not being heard. Or maybe just not being listened to.
Although I do not wish to generalise, as there are many good doctors out there, many of the ones I have seen are dismissive or uncaring. Maybe they are too pressed by deadlines and targets to give us the treatment we really deserve. And the waiting lists are often long, too long, with weeks or months of suffering before necessary operations are performed. (more...) A first aid kit is an essential for any home, car or place of work. It is easy to forget about having a first aid kit box because for most people it is not something that is used every day. However, on the odd occasion that it is needed, a first aid kit box will be invaluable to health and in some cases, prompt first aid action has saved lives and minimised serious injury. A first aid kit should be kept in an air tight box, clearly marked and always kept in the same place so that everybody know exactly where it is. It is no good in an emergency if time is wasted in searching for the lost first aid kit box! The contents of a first aid kit box can vary according to individual needs or legal requirements. However, the basic contents should include alcohol-free wipes, plasters, dressing bandages, gloves, tape, scissors and safety pins, eye bath and sterile eye dressing. (more...) Even people who take care of their teeth sometimes lose them as they age. The leading cause of tooth loss is tooth decay. Decay occurs when bacteria in our mouths combine with the foods we eat to produce acids. These acids gradually destroy tooth enamel, which affects the structure of our teeth. The natural result is discomfort that will inevitably turn into pain. Then the tooth must be removed. While proper oral hygiene is important, it may not prevent decay. According to a recent report, more than 90 percent of adults in the UK have some degree of tooth decay. Some of these patients will eventually lose their teeth. One-fourth of adults over the age of sixty are edentate, or toothless. The good news for these patients is that there are now dental implants to save them the pain and embarrassment of losing their teeth. The cosmetic dentistry guide dental implants page can tell you everything you need to know. Unfortunately, that isn't the whole story. (more...) Many people like to keep a first aid box where they need it most – either at home, in their car or in their caravan. Often they will keep a First aid kit box in all of the most important locations to ensure that it is there when they need it, if they need it. A good and comprehensive first aid kit can contain several things. One thing to bear in mind though is that some of the items may be perishable and it is important that you do not use them beyond the dates stated on the box or bottle. The basics can include pain relief, such as aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol; sachets of cold relief powder or other treatments for colds and sore throats; motion sickness pills and indigestion pills. A thermometer might also be useful for checking for fever. (more...) The acai berry diet is the latest in a long line of global diet fads. Diet fads began in the 1970s when Americans embraced the Grapefruit Diet and exported it around the world. Of course, this new regime isn't being promoted as a diet fad. They simply call it a superfood, which is a word that has several definitions. So, is the acai berry a superfood? Can it cure and protect against deadly diseases and help us all look like supermodels? Of course not. The acai berry is no panacea or nostrum. But it is an extremely healthy fruit. According to test results, the acai berry is chockfull of antioxidants, amino acids, and has a healthy dose of protein in each serving. Since fruits are not known for their protein, the 8 grams of it in every 100 gram serving is extremely impressive. The acai berry also contains about five times the amount of antioxidants as antioxidant-rich fruits like blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. (more...) There are so many vitamins available to choose from health food stores and supermarkets now. Many people rely on their daily handful of vitamins and they truly believe that they make them much healthier and provide a dose of whatever essentials they are lacking from their daily diet. They either tend to be one of two types, those who are already very healthy and take exercise and health checkups on a regular basis and visit their Richmond Hill Dental surgery every six months; and those whose diet is sadly lacking in fresh healthy food, take little exercise and rely on the vitamins as a last resort. There are other types of people who simply do not believe in vitamins and they firmly are of the opinion that you should be able to get everything you need from a balanced diet. Again these fall into two camps. (more...) There are many traditional indigenous health systems that have evolved over hundreds of years. While allopathic medicine continues to be the mainstream way of treating health problems worldwide, alternative therapies have always had their own important place in the health sector. Acupuncture is an ancient oriental system of health care in which a problem is seen in the context of the patient and what is treated is the individual in total and not the illness in isolation. It is a holistic healing method that concentrates on the body in its entirety. The basis of acupuncture is Qi – the life force or energy that flows through the body in a particular manner. Acupuncture is an accepted and popular system and acupuncture can be found widely. Acupuncture Peterborough clinics can be found easily by searching online. As more and more alternative therapies are being subjected to modern testing methods, it is becoming clear that many of these ancient systems of knowledge do indeed work in a safe manner. (more...) Nobody wants to be sick. Everyone wants to be healthy and many people strive to great lengths to be healthy. There are many natural supplements that have been designed to keep people healthy, (whether they work or not is a different matter), but there will come a time when natural supplements won't work and you will need to see a doctor. With the ever increasing demand to see your gp, it is becoming harder to get an appointment with your doctor. If your doctor happens to be ill unexpectedly and there is no replacement for them then chances are you will either have to wait a long time to see a doctor, or not be able to get an appointment at all. It is in this scenario that you wish your gp's practice had locum insurance so they could easily hire another doctor to take their place. Locum insurance takes the burden of the practice to hire a doctor, nurse or other staff member if something unexpected occurs and a member of their staff is unable to come into work. The last thing you want when you need to see your doctor or nurse is not being able to see any doctor or nurse because they are ill and have no replacement. Locum insurance is vital for any practice because you never know when the unexpected will occur. By now, we all know that a healthier lifestyle is one which includes a balanced diet and a degree of exercise. However, it can be difficult to design a new lifestyle regime from scratch: how to know the amount of exercise? How to decide what to eat? If you are new to healthy living, you may well be confused by all the fitness media and hyped up miracle diets out there. However, by following a few basic guidelines, you will find that structuring a good, solid eating and exercise plan that will work for you is not as difficult as it seems. To begin with, you should focus on what you are putting into your body. Remember that crash diets, involving only lettuce and protein shakes are not going to work. This kind of meal plan will only encourage your metabolism to slow down, making it harder for you to lose weight in the long term. (more...) Looking after your health is something that we now know is very important. Whilst modern medicine can do a multitude of great things, it is not always so easy for us to get the treatment we want when we want it. The United Kingdom has a wonderful health service but it is fair to say that issues such as long waiting times can make it very frustrating. This issue is one of the top reasons why many people are now turning to private health insurance to meet their needs. For a premium every month, you can enjoy many benefits that those without this type of insurance do not. For example, it is quite possible to choose the hospital at which you will be treated should an injury or illness occurr. Once you have chosen a hospital, you can also make use of a private room on a private ward, many with en-suite bathrooms and fantastic menus. The visiting times are less restrictive and minor operations can even be fitted in around your work schedule or prior commitments. (more...)
